2017 Hyundai Verna (Next-Gen) Is a Value Addition; Coming Next Year

Newly designed interiors mimicking that of Elantra. Indian launch is likely by the second half of 2017.

Hyundai recently revealed the 2017 Verna sedan ('Accent' in some markets) at the 2016 Chengdu Motor Show in China. The new car with completely refreshed exteriors and interiors will go on sale in China and Korea by this month, while the Indian entry is expected by the later half of next year.

The out-going fourth-generation Hyundai Verna was a completely new and exciting car, thanks to its 'Fluidic Sculpture' styling philosophy that has now taken over the design trends of every models in the company's stable. The 2017 Verna adds more value to the fluidic styling, more like an essential evolution now dubbed as 'Fluidic Sculpture 2.0'. The sedan now looks more contemporary, joining the league of the new Elantra and even Creta in some sense. This includes the large hexagonal grille with chrome elements, sweeping headlamps with LED DRLs, elegant side character line, and a sharper-looking tail lights with LED decorations. The roof line and the C-pillar now appear a bit elongated, while the mounded spoiler on the boot lid is now more obvious.

Yet, the interiors are the real talking point of the new Verna. The new 'floating' dashboard layout and styling is significantly different from the existing pattern, similar to that of the new Elantra again. The touchscreen infotainment screen on the centre console is now placed a bit higher, with the AC vents moving to the sides. The new 3-spoke steering wheel and the instrument cluster looks more premium and elegant. The Chinese-spec car is seen with all-black interiors with silver embellishments, while the Indian-spec may retain the dual-tone black and beige interiors.

2017 Hyundai Verna sees more stylish enhancements and value additions inside the cabin

The car has obviously grown bigger in dimensions than its predecessor, measuring 4,380 mm long, 1,460 mm high, and 1,728 mm wide, with an overall wheelbase of 2,600 mm. However, the chassis and the suspension mechanicals remains the same, although we hope to see better improvements in highway handling and stability. The low rear seating is an another pit-fall with the Verna.

The Indian-spec 2017 Verna is likely to retain the existing engine line-up consisting of 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre petrol, and 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre CRDi diesel mills. The already available 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions will be extended as well. Hyundai is already offering standard dual airbags with the option of 4 airbags in SX(O) trim, while the entry-level 1.4-litre variants may likely get standard ABS with the model update next year.
