Volkswagen's much awaited sub-4m compact sedan "Ameo" has been unveiled in Delhi, just before the expected global debut at the 2016 Auto Expo tomorrow. The car that is specifically made for the our domestic market speaks for VW India's commitment to the Indian market and its ambition to crack the mass-market entry-level sedan segment.
The Ameo is basically a Polo hatch with an enlarged boot and rear-quarter panels. Built on the same PQ25 platform as the Polo, the Ameo sports conventional-type boot lid and angular L-shaped tail lamp clusters akin to that of the Polo, along with 15-inch ‘TOSA’ alloys. While the frontal and side profile of the car's design remains almost similar to the car it is based on, the rear appears little eccentric to the German design.
On the inside, the Ameo is all familiar thanks to the black and beige dual-tone interiors, silver trim on the center console, and the 3-spoke steering wheel with audio buttons and manual adjustability, all from the Polo hatch. However, the Mirror-Link infotainment system is a value-addition, along with cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, and rear AC vents. The new Ameo will come with ABS and dual front airbags as standard across all trim levels.
Suggestively, the engine line-up for the Ameo is also from its hatchback sibling. This includes the 1.5-litre TDI diesel developing 90 PS and 230 Nm. VW has also confirmed the 1.2-litre 3-cylinder MPI petrol motor producing 75 PS and 125 Nm. In terms of geabox, a 5-speed manual and 7-speed DSG is confirmed.
Did you watch the Volkswagen Jelabi commercial teaser of the new Ameo?? Volkswagen claims that this car convey's its commitment to the Indian market and buyer requirement, but the question worth asking is, are the sub- 4m compact sedans the ultimate destiny of Indian car industry?? I'm fairly divided on that, yet we notice every major auto makers have entered the segment that is quite popular among mass buyers.
