VW Twin-Up! Diesel & Electric Sandwiched!!

Volkswagen unveiled the production version of its diesel-electric hybrid concept the Twin-Up! at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show few days ago, which shares bits of futurity with the XL1.

As the name suggests, the Twin Up! is primarily the VW Up! City car with dual drive sources – an 800cc 2-cylinder Turbo charged common rail diesel motor churning out 47 bhp and 119 Nm, coupled with an electric motor picking up 47 bhp and 139 Nm at its fullest. Worth to note is the fact that the diesel motor is same as the one used in the famed XL1, while the electric motor is 20 bhp more powerful than in the XL1, making the Twin Up! a studious development.

With its combined system output of 74 bhp in hybrid mode, the Twin Up! claims 0-100 km/h in 15.3 secs with a top speed electronically limited to 140 km/h. Average Co2 emission is at just 27g/km for a mileage of 1.1 litre of diesel per 100 kms! A greener driver purely on electric power is pegged at 31 miles.

All these makes the Twin Up! an important model in the VW’s fleet of hybrid vehicles under development.
