When we passionately buy cars and want to envy others, we always go one step further to add up some fashionable accessories so as to make it perfect and more appealing. Especially for SUVs and MPVs, almost all of the owners modify their vehicles manifestation by fixing bumper guards, bull and push bars, side steps, chunky yet sporty alloy wheels, additional halogen lamps and imperatively the roof-top luggage carrier or rack.
People feel that such additions improves the car's road presence considerably and gives it a butch look. That's true in several fronts, but what's interesting about the roof rack? One can witness that almost all the trendy SUVs and MPVs - Scorpio, Innova, Bolero, Grande, XUV 5oo, Fortuner, etc. are fitted with the roof racks. I even saw a Toyota Land Cruiser with a roof rack in Chennai. I almost got vertigo!!

Roof-top luggage racks are useful only for those who carry a great deal of cargo with them in the form of bulky or lengthy packings, which cannot be accommodated inside the car's boot. Especially when you want to carry your bicycle for the weekend trips, or transport items while shifting home or carry luggages to sustain a nationwide yatra, their utility is terrific. But for a city dweller who meets his day-to-day commutation to office, or for a person who don't do all these activities, roof racks means of no use. Especially in the era of automobiles where cabin space management is paramount and boot capacities are enormous and can be expanded, they matter very less.
Such roof-top luggage racks, carriers and boxes may affect the aero-dynamics of the car and reduce the fuel efficiency. SUVs themselves, due to their massive size, height and weight, suffer from higher center of gravity phenomenon while braking or cornering affecting the car's handling and stability. The roof racks and boxes would add worse to it. More than anything, it seriously affects the cars genuine looks and styling, making them look cheap and like cabs, aiming for hauling objects. The tailor-made roof railings in some cars which makes them look smart and sportier, is disturbed. I don't think that all the owners who have fixed them on their cars use them frequently or occasionally either. It is better not to use them unless it it inevitable.
