2017 Range Rover Sport To Feature Ingenium Engine, Semi-Autonomous Techs

Land Rover's mid-size SUV Range Rover Sport (second-generation) is awaiting a significant mid-term update later this year. The 2017 model year car is expected to go on sale late this year or early next year in Europe with significant powertrain and technology upgrades including JLR's frugal 'Ingenium' series diesel engine and a series of semi-autonomous driving techs. Noticeable changes outside may remain limited spruced-up honeycomb grille and bumper air intakes, while the interior may feature an larger touchscreen display for the new infotainment system.

The 2017 RR Sport will get the option of the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder SD4 Ingenium diesel engine for the first time, which is rated at 240 hp and 500 Nm of max torque. Already offered in both Discovery Sport and RR Evoque models, the Ingenium engine from the JLR's stable has been designed for easy performance, refinement, and frugality, with an impressive carbon emission rating of 164 g/km. LR claims that the engine makes the car hit 0-100 kmph in less than 8 seconds. Other engines in the line-up includes a 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel, 3.0-litre V6 supercharged petrol, and a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 petrol depending on the market.

On the inside, the new 10-inch touchscreen infotainment will see a host of functionalities including JLR's InControl Touch Pro that enables pinch/ zoom/ swipe actions for navigating maps and other uses, making the driver the use the system with ease while driving. A dedicated smartphone app Incontrol Remote Premium shares car and climate control data with the mobile devices, while the Commute mode function tracks frequent travel routes of the users.

An another area of new additions to the car is the host of semi-autonomous driving features that are to be added to the upcoming car. This includes Advanced Tow Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), and Intelligent Speed Limiter. Designed to work alongside existing safety features like lane-departure warning, emergency braking, and rear park-distance control, these new techs are here to improve driver's control and convenience, says the company.

For instance, the Advanced tow assist can steer the car automatically with respected to a trailer's position using a camera system, while the AEB monitors the road situation ahead and warns the driver, only to intervene if his/ her response is not adequate on time. The Speed limiter, on the other hand, automatically maintains the prescribed speed of the road by reading the speed limit signs. Blind spot assist monitors the car's blind spots and in case of any change in lanes which may cause any collision, the system takes over the steering.

In India, the launch of the 2017 model year RR Sport is expected only after the car's European launch, therefore the car may hit our shores only after mid next year in all probabilities.
