2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC: More Than Just C-Class In High Heels

We all know that the all-new Mercedes GLC is based on the C-Class platform, but to consider it as a mere jacked-up car would be an unfair account of the design and engineering effort by the company in making this car. The GLC is a replacement to the GLK-Class, the renaming is the result of Mercedes's new nomenclature scheme. With the launch of GLC, Mercedes has filled the phenomenal void in its SUV range, between the compact GLA and the mid-size GLE. Moreover, its time for the company to steal some sales from its arch rivals - Audi and BMW, as the GLC is likely to render a far-more tougher competition to the Audi Q5 and BMW X3. For sometime now, the company will sell the GLC as limited-run CBU model called as 'Edition 1' featuring almost every optional features along with the standard ones as well, until local assembly of the model commences in India.

So how far does the GLC stand out from its C-Class pedigree? Design wise, the new SUV is bulbous and curvaceous as the C-Class, yet the boxy styling of GLK has been replaced with something more contemporary. The large, imposing family grille and sleek headlamps with integrated LED DRLs coupled with the under-ride guard make striking nose, while the high hood line and humble roof line along with the gently sloping dropping line presents a more sophisticated and expensive vibe. The 18-inch 5-spoke alloys works well with the car's long wheelbase and short overhangs, while the aluminium-look running boards balances the otherwise upright stance. At the rear, the GLC is still broad and its shoulders as muscular as the sides, flanked by S-Class inspired split LED tail lamps with unique night design.

Open the doors, all you see is the beautifully crafted cabin straightly lifted from the C-Class. But it has worked perfectly for the GLC, as the interiors are cut above anything we can avail in the segment right now, the design and ambience simply shames the cabin of both Q5 and X3. Further, the high seating position provides a commanding road view and driving position than the C-Class. The automatic panoramic sliding sunroof and the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with CD/ USB/ Bluetooth / Internet connectivity and navigation are offered as well.

What is even more existing is the long list of equipment in the GLC range. For instance, there are six airbags including window and knee bags. Other safety items include Adaptive braking with hold function, Hill-Start Assist, ESP, Attention Assist, and Active Parking Assist with 'PARKTRONIC' function. For dynamic driving, cruise control, Direct-Steer system with speed-sensitive power assist and variable steering ratio, Start/ Stop function, and '4MATIC' permanent all-wheel-drive system is also on the offer.

Mercedes GLC: The C-Class interiors that we all love!

The GLC comes in both petrol and diesel variants, both the engines from the C-Class range. The GLC 220d is powered by 2.2-litre diesel motor delivering 170 hp and 400 Nm of max torque. The petrol GLC 300 features a 2.0-litre unit making 245 hp and 370 Nm of torque at peak demand. Both the engines are paired to a standard 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic transmission. Although the petrol engine has been tuned for more power than in C-Class, the diesel variant is relatively under-powered, especially considering the added weight and off-road expectations of the GLC. More powerful engine options may feature in the GLC AMG trim, if at all launched in India later. 

All in all, Mercedes has designed the GLC not simply to refurbish the out-going GLK, but the company seems to have clearly understood the requirements of the segment and impress the competition. This is very much the case in India, as the buyers will definitely appreciate the GLC's elegant compact SUV styling, spruced-up with high-levels of equipment and safety features. Priced at INR 50.7 lakhs (220d) and INR 50.9 lakhs (300), the GLC is a bit pricey, but once the local production of the car starts, more affordable trim levels and aggressive pricing can be expected.

Mercedes GLC is likely to impress buyers, thanks to its elegant styling, equipment levels, & off-road abilities. 

The Mercedes GLK was one of the most successful range in the Western markets, but it was never offered in India, and luxury crossover buyers in the segment took refuge with the rival German brands. With the entry of the GLC, thing are set for a real change!
