2017 Renault Kaptur (India-bound) - In Pictures

Renault has unveiled the Russian market-spec urban crossover - 'Kaptur'. A marginally tweaked version of the Euro-spec 'Captur', this 5-seater compact crossover based on the popular Duster platform is likely to be extended to other emerging markets as well, including Brazil and India. Sources say that the Kaptur is likely to be introduced in the Indian market by October next year, with local production and competitive pricing to take on the premium compact SUV segment in India.

The story of the new Kaptur begins with an emphatic 'K', probably to signify that this is a bit different from the European Captur that is based on the fourth-generation Clio supermini hatchback. However, design wise, the Kaptur predominantly carries forward the design and proportions of the Captur, which includes elongated MPV-like cabin with forward-set windscreen, higher ground clearance, wider tracks, and chunky wheel arches.

On the front, the car is dominated by defining signature grille, sculpted hood, and sweeping headlamp clusters, complemented by the sporty lower bumper cluster with LED DRLs. The plastic claddings all over the sides give a rough, muscular feel to the car, along with sculpted doors and rear quarter panels. While the rear is a bit plain, but totally complements the overall theme of the design.

The Kaptur is built on the stretched 'BO' platform that also underpins the popular Duster SUV. This may help Renault India in a big way, as the platform is highly localised in the market. The Kaptur features increased ride height and a heavier suspension setup than the Captur, along with a four-wheel drive system (for the Russian market). It measures 4,333 mm in length, 1,813 mm wide, and 1,613 mm high, slightly shorted than the on-going tiny SUV, the Renault Koleos.

On the inside, the dashboard layout and cabin ergonomics are similar to the European model, with a chunky 3-spoke steering wheel and a 7-inch touchscreen infortainment system. The 60/40-split configuration rear seats are complimented by a standard 387 litres boot volume at the rear.  

Although the company is tight lipped on any technical details, we can expect that the Indian-spec Kaptur may share the engine line-up and AWD drive system from the Duster. With highly localised assembly, Renault's premium compact crossover can be competitively priced to take on the likes of Mahindra XUV500, Tata Safari Storme, and the yet to come cars like Hyundai Tuscon, Honda BR-V, VW Tiguan, and Tata Hexa.
