2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet - Auto Expo Report

One of the latest, coolest and grandest car unveiled at the on-going 2016 Delhi Auto Expo, the 2017 Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet has received its Indian debut, just few months after its global premiere at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. This is the sixth variant in the current global S-Class family, and the first open-top Mercedes since 1971. The S-Class Cabriolet offers a majestic, sensual and mind-blowing design along with the state-of-the-art technology that belongs to the S-Class. The ultimate convertible will go on sale in India later this year.


Under the hood is a 4.7-litre twin-turbo petrol engine that generates 449 hp (335 kW) and 700 Nm of torque at peak demand, and is paired to a 9-speed 9G-TRONIC dual-clutch automatic transmission. The cabriolet can sprint from idle to 100 kmph in just in 4.6 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 250 kmph.

 On the design front, the Cabriolet is one of the most beautiful and elegant S-Class of all times, thanks to the signature black diamond grille and solo louvre in silver with chrome inserts, along with the elegant sweeping-out headlights with LEDs and DRLs. The long bonnet has two dynamic character lines, while the large air-intakes in the bumper give the car a brawny looks. Moving to the sides, the car renders a coupe-like styling with the soft-roof closed owing to the lower greenhouse, dropping line of the side wall and fully retractable side windows. Flattened LED-powered tail lamps and muscular shoulders completes the rear of the cabriolet.

Inside, the S-Class Cabriolet sets an exceptionally classy interiors, very easy to mistake it as some open-air lounge! The multi-tone cabin with wood trim and chrome inserts are well-made in terms of quality and design. The full-digital instrument cluster with an integrated infotainment system and rotary knob gear shift are from the S-Class sedan, along with the 3-spoke steering wheel. Moreover, the car boasts for the first time an intelligent climate control system 'THERMOTRONIC' that works in tandem with the roof system and solar radiation levels to present an ideal cabin climate in all conditions.

The convertible's soft top is cleverly designed to multi-fold above the luggage compartment and takes around 20 seconds to either open or close, operated at speeds up to 60 kmph. This can be operated from a distant using the key as well. The car is equipped with an optional automatic wind protection system 'AIRCAP' that is necessary for an open-top.

Apart from the S-Class cabriolet, the company also unveiled the GLC Crossover for the Indian audience at the show.
