Chevrolet Essentia Compact Sedan Global Debut

In an unusual surprise from the General Motors India, Chevrolet has revealed for the first time an India-specific Essentia sub- 4 metre compact sedan at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo. The company has been silently working on the project since 2013, and the product will hit the market next year. The compact sedan shares the platform and engine line-up with the Beat hatchback.

Once off to production, the mini sedan will be positioned below the Sail sedan and will go against the likes of an array of compact sedan in the Indian market including the newly revealed Tata Zica sedan, and Volkswagen Ameo.

Visually, the Essentia sedan follow's the global design language of Chevrolet, although in a restrictive manner. The dual-port grille boasting the bow-tie logo dominates the front fascia, while the overall body design is plain and simple. Chevrolet calls the Essentia a “traditional but richly appointed notchback” that is rich in content and in space. The sedan can accomodate five adults and decent luggage typical for a compact sedan.

The sedan stands on the familiar platform that of the Beat hatchback, and has been designed at GM’ Korea Design Studio. Therefore, expect the engine line-up and trim options mimicking the Beat hatchback once the car is on sale. GM says that the production version will be equipped with the Chevrolet MyLink2, an infotainment system that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto softwares. Active and passive safety features such as dual air bags, ABS and a rear-view camera will also be offered.
