Mercedes-Benz has finally revealed the upcoming 'luxury
beast' model that replaces the existing GL-Class. Not just the car in itself,
even its name gets a little tweak - the class will henceforth be
"GLS" as per the brand's new naming nomenclature. Touted as the
"S-Class of the SUV segment", the GLS is the only full-fledged
7-seater European SUV that is spacious and luxurious as none so far, with
superior levels of comfort, on-road and off-road dynamics, and safety.
The new Merc SUV is basically a tweaked version of the
out-going GL with a re-worked front fascia comprising of newly designed LED-DRL
integrated headlamps, and super-imposing grille with bigger tri-star logo.
Other exterior changes are subtle and may even go unnoticed for most of us.
Significant updates are evident inside the cabin such as the dashboard mounted
free-standing tablet-like 8-inch screen, a new 3-spoke steering wheel wrapped
in Nappa leather, and TFT-powered instrument cluster.
There is also a near-endless list of safety features available
in the GLS Class including the standard Collision prevention assistance,
Attention and Crosswind assist, Brake Assist system, cruise control, ESP and
electronic AWD traction system. Buyers can shell out more money to avail Driver
Assistance Package that comes with a host of safety techs including Active Lane
Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, and Pedestrian detection with
automatic braking.
The flagship variant GLS500 will get a 4.7-liter V8 bi-turbo
petrol engine that pumps out 449 hp of max power and 516 lb-ft of max torque.
The GLS Class also bags a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 petrol that delivers
329 hp, and a 3.0-liter V6 turbo diesel rated at 255 hp of peak power.
The new GLS will officially debut at Los Angeles Motor Show later this month and deliveries are said to commence by March 2016 in United States. Mercedes is likely to introduce it in India in mid-2016 to replace the GL that is currently on sale.
