Fiat has used the legendary 'Tipo' nameplate several times
in its 116 years of history, but the latest revivification sets the return of
the brand to the C-segment in a big way, succeeding the Linea. This all-new
three-box sedan seems to earn a well-balanced score with utmost practicality
and value-for-money.
Surprisingly for a mass-market C-segment model, the new Tipo
is overtly premium-looking. On the face, the pronouncing full-width grille,
narrow headlights (inspired from BMW 3-Series??) and a sculptured bonnet is
exceptional to a car of this kind. The roof-line is curvy, coupled with the
sloping rear glass, giving the sedan a nice diminutive silhouette. Rear-end is
distinctive and peculiar, but that how the Italian designers conceive their
cars. I'm just remembered of the fact that the tail-end of their past cars -
Siena (1997) and Linea (2006) - have garnered similar feeling of being a bit
quirky.
2016 Fiat Tipo boasts an attractive design better than any Fiat sedan so far |
Interestingly, the Tipo was designed essentially as a sedan
first, unlike the typical practice of slapping a hatch with a boot in its butt!
As a result, the sedan is serene in its stance and built especially the doors
and glass areas, with a Hofmeister kink-like overall appeal mimicking BMWs.
Definitely, the Tipo packs attractive exteriors better than any Fiat sedans
till date.

Moreover, the equipment and features are mouth-watering. A
choice of three trim, with ABS with EBD, ESC with Hill Hold, 3.5-inch LCD infotainment
system and automatic boot opening as standard, is appealing. The flagship trim
boasts Uconnect 5-inch touch screen radio, Bluetooth, 3.5-inch TFT instrument
panel, multi-function steering wheel, automatic climate control, cruise control
and front armrest.
Fiat Tipo: BMW's Hofmeister kink-like overall appeal is a bliss |
The engine line-up for the Tipo sedan consists of four units
- two petrol and two diesels - with power ranging from 94-118 hp. A 5-speed
manual, 6-speed manual and a 6-speed auto gearbox options are available
depending on the engine.
Tipo's interior is a typical new-age Fiat flair - smart and practical |
The Tipo, aka Aegea in Turkey, is currently assembled only
in Turkey, and will go on sale in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa)
region very soon. It will be followed by a hatch and an estate version of the
Tipo next year.
