2016 Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet Teased Before Frankfurt Debut

Mercedes Benz is adding a ridiculously lovely two-door convertible to the S-Class family - which awaits first ever public preview at the upcoming 2015 IAA Frankfurt motor show next month. The official teaser image showing the new S-Class Cabrio alongside its original forerunner conveys that the grandeur is back. After bringing back the glory days of personal luxury with its S-Class Maybach and Coupe, Mercedes tries to repeat the wonder with the cabriolet as well.

The S-Class Cabriolet is one of those rare concept cars that come into reality. Back in 2006, Mercedes showed the first ever modern S-Class convertible as a concept. It hasn't produced one such cabrio since the last W112-platform droptop rolled off the assembly line in 1971. With the present generation, the company tries to appeal premium buyers with a variety of models suiting every tastes and niche. Convertible, being a tiny niche segment, is worth exploring for Daimler since we have already got vividly awesome S600Maybach, XL-sized Pullman, and AMG versions in the S-Class group.

The S-Class Cabrio features a traditional fabric roof to save weight and space instead of a folding hard-top of the SL. Naturally, the car adopts the long, swooping design of the present-gen S-Class whose platform it shares with. That's why we can be confident that the deeply sculpted rear seats will pamper two grown-ups in impeccable luxury, in spite of being a two-door car. Yet, the boot space may suffer owing to its large folding roof.

The S-Class Cabrio will be a comfortable open-top cruiser with premium S-Class features
Although there is very little official info available on engine line-up and features as of now, the cabriolet will inherit the S-Class coupe's cabin and engines in all probability, including the incredible 4.7-litre V8 from S500 with 449 bhp, a 576bhp tuning straight from the S63, and an AMG-tuned S65 pumping up 630bhp. The convertible is most likely to be a comfortable cruiser rather than an true-blue sports machine, as expected in its league. The car will feature exotic features and technologies like the crystal-infused LED headlights, Magic Body Control system for handling dynamics, and comfort-enhancing Airscarf neck warmers and Aircap wind baffle.

The luxury cabrio's ultimate rival would be the Bentley Continental GT in the global markets, and may cost around £110,000 (INR 1.15 crores) when it goes on sale at the end of this year in Europe. Mercedes India has just launched the S-Class coupe in the Indian market and it is more likely that the cabrio may also be launched next year.
