2016 Chevrolet Camaro Is Slim, Powerful Ever with Improved Aerodynamics

The sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro was recently official previewed at a special public event arranged at Detroit's Belle Isle Park in USA. Though the new design is not a radical transformation from the out-going model, a new chassis, fresh engine line-up, and smart technologies takes this car to a whole new level of 'pony' motoring.

At the time when Camaro's key opponents in its home land (USA), the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger, are more exciting in looks and pretty powerful, redesigning it would have been a herculean task for the company's designers. While retaining its legendary muscular looks that define Camaro for almost 50 years, the new car is slim and sleep with better aerodynamic characters.

Obvious from the pictures, the 2016 Camaro’s design is more of an evolution from the last generation, with aggressive front and muscular side profile. The new car actually sits on a new GM’s Alpha platform that underpins the new Cadillac ATS, and is 90.7 kg lighter due to extensive aluminium usage. It also uses 70 percent new components, says the GM-owned company.

Chevrolet says that the new Camaro has been designed for improved performance, stability, cooling and lower wind noise intrusions, and has been subjected to 350 hours of wind tunnel testing to affirm its reduced aerodynamic lift. The 20-degree angle lower grille bars planned earlier has now been replace with a 13-degree one for improved engine-cooling airflow, without tampering the car’s original grille design.

The company’s aerodynamics team has also employed a flush belly pan that stretches from the front grille to the center of the pony car in place of regular front air dam to ease aerodynamic lift. In addition, the small “spats” in front of the tires, and the overall lift of the car has been reduced by 30 percent.

On the other hand, the new pony car gets new engine offerings that makes it a hell lot powerful that it used to be. The entry-level 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo unit pumps out 275 hp and 295 lb-ft of max torque. An all-new 3.6-liter V6 has been added to the list, which makes 335 hp and 284 lb-ft of peak torque. Do notice that the 4-cylinder unit has better torque than V6 - unbelievable! While the most-powerful 6.2-liter V8 engine in the SS trim receive a performance boost up to 455 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque and lower emissions.

Thus, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro tries to address two greatest criticisms of the model - heavy for 'pony' standards and less powerful. It has always been an iconic car in its typical American car segment of pony cars, along with Mustang and Dodge Challenger.

There is no clue yet from GM India on bringing the Camaro range to the Indian market, although it has imported a car for its R&D early this year.
